St Johns Heritage Garden

in 2006, St Johns Heritage Garden project won £50,000 funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, with a further £32,000 from Penistone & District Leader+.

The work went out to tender in early May, and work started in June 2006. The gardens were blessed on Yorkshire Day, 1st August, by Father David, in the presence of Penistone's Mayor, Mrs Nora Collett.

A memorial spiral is now complete and is a tribute to Nicholas Saunderson, the blind mathematician, born in Thurlstone, who became Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. A millstone heritage trail, featuring significant dates in Penistone's history, can be followed through the churchyard from Church St to Shrewsbury Road.

A new archway to frame the Shrewsbury Road entrance is now in place. Local people were given the opportunity to make their mark in clay. These clay tablets are to be used to make two bronze panels to be incorporated into the archway.
